Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
