Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained no new data.
