Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
