Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
